Belgian Initiatives

Belgian social label

The Belgian social label was created under a law passed on 27 February 2002 aiming at promoting socially responsible production. This law came into force on 1 October 2003.
Any enterprise, Belgian or foreign, may apply to have the label awarded to one or more of its products sold on the Belgian market. The company must demonstrate that each of these products was created with due respect for the eight core conventions of the ILO. The business must also agree to checks, conducted by "social audit firms" accredited by the Belgian Ministry of Economic Affairs, and all applications for the social label need to be co-signed by employee representatives from the company in question.
Furthermore, the new law instituted a Committee for Socially Responsible Production. It comprises sixteen members, appointed by the government, employers, trade unions and consumers, who decide on label applications, monitor the label's usage and investigate any complaints that could lead to a product being stripped of the label.
