At the federal level, companies that emit more than a prescribed amount of listed pollutants must report annually to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is a national, legislated, publicly accessible inventory that provides Canadians with information about the releases and transfers of key pollutants in their communities. Created in 1992, it is maintained by Environment Canada under the authority of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999).

A bank with equity of one billion dollars or more shall, in accordance with regulations made under subsection, annually publish a statement describing the contribution of the bank and its prescribed affiliates to the Canadian economy and society (article 459.3).

In March 2009 the Government of Canada has announced its CSR Strategy for the Canadian extractive sector operating abroad. The Building the Canadian Advantage Strategy includes four main pillars: 1) support for host country resource governance capacity-building initiatives; 2) endorsement and promotion of widely-recognized international CSR performance guidelines; 3) support for the development of a CSR Centre of Excellence; and, 4) the creation of the Office of the Extractive Sector CSR Counsellor.

Currently under development by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), this web-based resource will be the hub of knowledge on CSR-related practices in the extractive sector and serve as a tool to assist Canadian companies doing business around the world. The purpose of this notice is to provide guidance to reporting issuers (other than investment funds) on existing continuous disclosure (CD) requirements relating to environmental matters under securities legislation.
This notice clarifies existing disclosure requirements relating to environmental matters and does not create any new legal requirements or modify existing ones. It is intended to assist issuers in: determining what information about environmental matters needs to be disclosed, and enhancing or supplementing their disclosure regarding environmental matters, as necessary.
