About GRI

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) was created in 1997 by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It aims to raise the level of sustainable development methods to be on a par with that of financial reporting to ensure the comparability, credibility, rigour, frequency and verifiability of information communicated.

GRI has embarked upon this task with the active participation of companies, environmental and social NGOs, accounting firms, trade unions, investors and other stakeholders across the globe. GRI published a draft of its Sustainability Reporting Guidelines in 1999. After an extensive period of additional drafting, testing and consultation, the first official version of its Sustainability Reporting Guidelines was published in June 2000.

The current 2006 G3 version was published following a cycle of testing, analysis, consultation and revision of the Guidelines, and additional documents. Future revision cycles will be rooted in the basic GRI principles in place since its inception: openness, balance, transparency and technical excellence.

GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines

GRI is made up of several types of documents serving as a basis for engaging in sustainability reporting.
Regardless of the type of organization, the GRI G3 (Generation 3) Guidelines provide a framework that organizations can adopt voluntarily and flexibly. The first part explains the principles to implement in reporting, and the type of information that is expected to be included.

In the second part, the different levels of application are explained. Lastly, six protocols describe in detail the indicators based on six CSR themes.

This publication helps to relate the Social Responsibility (SR) guidance in ISO 26000 to reporting guidance provided by GRI. In particular, this publication aims to help companies and other organizations that follow the GRI Guidelines to prepare their reports, understand how GRI reporting aspects and indicators are related to ISO 26000 clauses.
